1.4 What is Online Purchasing?
To create an effective online purchasing site, companies need to create the infrastructure (technology and processes) to accept and handle transactions on the web. The technology needed for online purchasing includes:
  1. An existing or new web site to host online shopping.
  1. A Secure Server to host online purchasing. The secure server encrypts the transaction data making it virtually impossible for an intruder to get access to transactional information like credit card numbers.
  1. Merchant Software to run your online purchasing. Merchant software creates ordering screens that reside on the secure server. The pages are created from product and pricing information the company inputs.
  1. Digital Authentication to monitor and ensure that intruders cannot access the secure server transactions.
  1. An Electronic Payment system that will process the credit card information.
  1. A bank where the transaction revenue will be transferred once the credit card verification is complete.

Many ISPs support online purchasing. An ISP can supply you with a secure server and with merchant software. They will help you register for Digital Authentication and Electronic Payment services. The electronic payment vendor will provide you with a list of banks that accept transfers from them.
